SIRG - Informal SIRGs - Ethics SIRG
[]

2003 Ethics and ID SIRG Roundtable in Brisbane, Australia

IASSID SPECIAL INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP
ON ETHICS AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY

Mission Statement
The special interest research group on ethics and intellectual disability is part of the IASSID, and aims at an open exchange of views on ethical issues regarding health and social practices in order to support persons with disabilities and their families by stimulating research on ethics within the field of intellectual disability, and by disseminating its results in the wider circle of the IASSID and the research community of which it is part.
In order to fulfil this mission the SIRG will foster communication between SIRG members and the broader IASSID community, hold conferences, seminars and symposia at regular intervals on topics relevant to their mission, coordinate, encourage and develop opportunities for consideration of ethical issues at the IASSID quadrennial conference and support the publication and dissemination of relevant material.

Ethics -SIRG Roundtable
SPECIAL INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP ETHICS AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY ROUNDTABLE 2003

The third roundtable of the SIRG Ethics and Disability (sponsored by the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities) will be held in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in November, 2003. The theme for the roundtable is: 'Political philosophies and economic frameworks'

This event will be held concurrently, ie as a stream, with the National Conference of the Australian Society for the Study of Intellectual Disability (ASSID), 17th-20th November. The theme of the ASSID conference is Imagination and Innovation. The registration desk will open with a social event on Sunday 16th November.

It is anticipated that by having the 2 events held together that there can be a cross-fertilisation of ideas and an opportunity for a wider group of Australians to access the discussions of the SIRG. An example of this is that Tim Stainton of the University of British Columbia, a member of the SIRG, will also be one of the key presenters of the ASSID conference. Other keynote speakers will be: Brendan Gleeson, Marcia Rioux, Gordan Grant, Carl Haywood, Nick Bouras, Trevor Parmenter, and Geraldine Holt.

PLEASE NOTE -- Although the deadline for the call for papers for the ASSID conference has passed, abstracts for the SIRG E&ID Roundtable (pertaining to the roundtable theme or free papers on other ethics related subjects) can be submitted till September 15th to the chairman of the SIRG E&ID, prof. Hans Reinders, [email protected] or [email protected] .

Registration for the ASSID conference is a condition for participation in the SIRG roundtable. Information about the registration can be found at:
http://www.rmit.edu.au/departments/ps/assid/brisbane2003/National_Conference_Promo_1.htm . For further enquiries about the ASSID conference, mail to
[email protected] or [email protected]

Brisbane in November is a delightful time to visit. The conference, to be held in late spring and timed for after the Rugby World Cup, will be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre, situated across the river from the inner city. The Convention Centre is part of the Southbank complex, which is the re-developed site of Expo 88. Accommodation, public transport, eating and recreational facilities are all in close vicinity.

For further information on participating in the SIRG Ethics and Intellectual Disability Roundtable, please contact Dr. Herman P. Meininger, [email protected] or [email protected]
