The Special Interest Research Group on Parenting and Intellectual

Disability (SIRG/PID) of the IASSID was founded in 1996 at an international conference in Denmark which was organised by the Danish Ministry of Social Affairs and The EU Commission. The SIRG was formally affiliated with IASSID in 2002. Subsequently, the SIRG/PID has developed topic streams on parenting at the IASSID Seattle 11 th World Congress in 2000, the European IASSID in Dublin in June, 2002, Montpellier 12 th World Congress, 2004 and the Asian-Pacific Regional Congress, Taipei, Taiwan, 2005.

Mission

The Parenting with Intellectual Disabilities SIRG has as its founding principles:

  • To encourage, promote and facilitate the development of research into parenting by people with intellectual disability.
  • To extend understanding of the barriers and obstacles that impact on the parenting capacities of people with intellectual disability.
  • To use reason and research to combat and challenge discrimination and prejudice against parents with intellectual disability.
Membership

Membership is open to persons with an interest in any facet of research or application related to parenting and intellectual disability.

All members of IASSID, individual and organisational, are eligible to join the SIRG/PID. Annual membership assessment is US$20 per calendar year. Payment to SIRG/PID can be made as part of the annual membership assessment dues to IASSID click here.

Non-members of IASSID may affiliate to the SIRG by registration with the Secretary and payment of an affiliation fee of US$25.

The SIRG will maintain a register of members. An updated copy of the register will be filed annually on 1 March each year with the Secretary of SIRG/PID.

Meetings

The First Meeting of the Special Interest Group on Parents and Parenting with Intellectual Disabilities was convened at IASSID Conference, Le Corum, Montpellier on 17 th June, 2004. Copies of those minutes can be obtained via e.mail from the Secretary, Gwynnyth Llewellyn at: [email protected] The next Parenting with Intellectual Disabilities SIRG meeting will take place in Maastricht 2-5 th August, 2006.
